Psychotherapy is a general term used to describe any therapeutic work of a psychological nature. The term may be regulated in some countries, but is not in others.
Be careful not to confuse Psychotherapy (a general term) with Psychoanalysis (a specific process). The latter was developed by psychiatric pioneer Sigmund Freud, and is the basis of caricatures of the psychiatric profession made popular in movies and TV shows such as Frasier.
